A department graduate has been short-listed in the broadcast category of the Guardian Student Media Awards.

Sam Brydges is one of five nominees in the category, which is run in association with Sky News, with the chance of winning a six week placement at Sky News, a week’s placement at The Guardian and £500.

Sam, who graduated this year with a BA (Hons) Journalism degree, said: “I am delighted to have been short-listed and little surprised. I was encouraged to enter by one of my tutors and now I’m really glad I did.”

To enter, Sam had to submit a 180 second piece related to a single story. He took the broadcast route in his final year and chose to enter his final piece of work; a television news story on taxi drivers in Chester being told to dress smarter.

Punchy

He thinks the story caught the eyes of the judges because his interviews were “punchy.”

“I managed to get good interviews with taxi drivers and comments from the public. I did the piece to camera in a bowtie so it was a very tongue in cheek news story and ended with me being driven back to the studio in my suit. I think overall it was entertaining.”

Five judges, including Jon Snow from Channel Four News and Radio One presenter Jo Whiley, will decide on the winner of the category.

Sam BrydgesThe Guardian says that the judges will be looking for “Innovative content, which displays original thinking and maximises the potency of the medium used.”

Sam is currently freelancing for Traffic Link and presenting the traffic and travel for several radio stations in the region. He says the work placements at The Guardian and Sky News that are up for grabs would be extremely beneficial.

“All work experience is good experience and to be able to put both the Guardian and Sky on my CV would be great and you never know where they may lead.”

Sam is no stranger to winning awards. Whilst in his first year of university he won the Daily Telegraph Sports Writer Award 2005 in which he had to write 200 words about a sporting hero. His prize was all-inclusive trip to California to watch the Pacific Life Open Tennis in Indian Wells.

Sam will find out if he has a second award to add to his list at the Guardian Student Media Awards ceremony on 21st November where the winners of all thirteen categories will be announced.
