Sports journalism students visit the heart of sport in Preston
First year Sports Journalism students had a taste of Preston’s sporting passion by visiting Preston North End Football Club.
Debbie Smaje was keen to check out the team, the ground and the half-time pie…
Was it the promise of a free night out, or a genuine interest in a bottom of the Championship clash that persuaded 30 Sports Journalism students to spend a night in the cold watching a club they don’t support?
Match day experience
The game predictably went to form, as Preston and QPR played out a dour 0-0 draw, Rangers goalkeeper Lee Camp saving a first half penalty. From a writer’s point of view, probably the best outcome, as it offered an opportunity for the students to give their opinions on the Deepdale match day experience, without being too heavily influenced by an exciting game!
On that note, it’s fair to say that the experience was mostly an enjoyable one. The view from the Tom Finney Stand was excellent and the atmosphere was good, thanks to being positioned near to Preston’s noisiest fans. The main downsides of the ground are familiar ones, overpriced catering and massive queues! The pies had mixed reviews, but the beer was as well received as ever!
It was a shame there was very little action on the pitch, but despite that, it was certainly an enjoyable night and something the majority of the group would do again, given the chance.
