UCLan works with editors of the future
The journalism department has teamed up with Trinity Mirror Regionals to launch an Editorial Leaders Programme for senior editors.
Thirteen editorial staff from the newsgroup will undertake a one year course designed to help understand the challenges of multimedia, which will lead to a postgraduate certificate qualification. Most of the teaching and discussions will be delivered online with delegates meeting for three, one week residentials.
The course will be taught by a mixture of UCLan lecturers and senior Trinity executives and replaces the publisher’s in-house course, Today’s Editor. The tailored course draws on modules from UCLan’s Journalism Leaders Programme, which has provided training to more than 80 editors and senior journalists since it was launched in January 2006.
Innovative
Trinity Mirror Regionals editorial director, Neil Benson, said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with UCLan, which has an excellent pedigree and a highly innovative and interactive approach.
“With the industry undergoing such radical change, we felt it was time to look for a new type of programme that will equip our next generation of newsroom leaders with all the key managerial skills, allied to a strongly enhanced understanding of journalism in the multimedia context.”
Trinity Mirror PLC is made up of three divisions and the Regional division publishes morning, evening and Sunday newspapers as well as many free and paid-for weekly titles across six regions.
Mike Ward, the head of the Department of Journalism, said: “I am delighted that Trinity Mirror has chosen the department’s Journalism Leaders Programme to spearhead its editorial management development programme for the digital age.
“This partnership marks another important step in the growth of the department’s digital services to the journalism industry.”
The Journalism department has already worked closely with Johnston Press, having given digital training to staff from the newsgroup, and together they appointed the Johnston Press Chair in Digital Journalism, Professor Jane Singer.
