Department trains Evening Post journalists for internet reporting
Reporters from the Lancashire Evening Post have been given intensive audio-visual training by UCLanís journalism department.
In order to to aid their online content development, Senior Lecturer Andy Dickinson spent the day teaching the group how to work with cameras and sound equipment to create video packages that can go on the newspaperís website.
It is part of Johnston Press funded project ìNewsrooms of the Futureî piloted by the Lancashire Evening Post (LEP) and will boost its online content and ensure that all its writers will become competent internet reporters.
Convergent Newsroom
LEP digital editor Martin Hamer said: ìThe ultimate aim is to produce a fully convergent newsroom in which reporters will be able to take video and audio footage to accompany the news stories they or others write.
“We are also doing a lot of cross promotions between the website and the newspaper emphasising the strengths of the respective mediums.î
The LEP staff have undertaken four sessions with the UCLan journalism department as part of their training. They have worked with department head Mike Ward on how to write for the internet effectively and with Mark Comerford who teaches on the new Journalism Leaders Programme about how to harness the internet as a news-gathering tool.
David Coates, LEP reporter and UCLan graduate, said he found it extremely useful.
ìThe session moved at a steady pace and it was good to see most of the equipment was simple to use and the method of editing it and uploading it onto the website did not require a computing degree.
“I have watched the Evening Post’s website grow into something quite exciting and I am now looking forward to taking part in continuing that growth, these skills will go a long way towards that.”
