International Journalism Co-ordinator Geoff Ward has just returned from a two-week tour of six Indian cities.

The main aim of the visit was to publicise the Departmentís new partnership with the Pune-based Indira School of Communication through a series of seminars that explored Indian and UK news media and opportunities in journalism education.

The seminars were delivered in co-operation with the Director of the Indira School of Communication, Shashidhar Nanjundaiah, and the Deputy Director George Jose.

Events were held in Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Indore and New Delhi.

Geoff Ward said: ìIt was an amazing opportunity to learn more about the fantastic growth of news media in India and meet committed and knowledgeable applicants for courses at the two centres.

ìThe comparative examination of journalism in India and the UK revealed patterns of similarities and difference that revealed challenges and opportunities for the future of journalism in both countries.

ìUnderstanding how journalism has developed, and is structured and practised, in the UK and India illustrated the benefits of taking an international view of journalism and learning from the experiences and activities of journalism in different areas of the world.î

From September 2006 the first two years of the UCLan course, BA (Hons) International Journalism will be delivered at the Indira School of Communication, with students coming to the UK to complete their third and final year.

BA (Hons) International Journalism is also delivered in a similar partnership at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China. The course is also run on the Preston campus, attracting students from the UK and a range of other countries.
