Chinese UCLan studentsí work exhibited in Paris
A class of Chinese UCLan students have produced a magazine that will be showcased in an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The 25 first year students are all based at UClanís partner college, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, in Guangzhou, China. They took part in the Colors Notebook Project which invites people from around the world to create their own notebook on any topic of their choice and contribute it to the exhibition.
They had only two weeks to fill 50 pages from scratch and decided to create a magazine that reflects life and society for young people in China. The students used all of their own content, artwork, photographs and layout.
Success
Their tutor Matt Horn said they should be proud of their success.
ìI was really impressed with the final project. They ran it like a magazine would be run and everything was written in English. Though I acted as an over-seeing editor I mainly left them to it so it is all their own work.î
The magazine touches on topics such as sport, food and fashion but also on others that are not commonly accepted in China such as homosexuality.
Matt said: ìThe group sat down and brainstormed ideas to write about and consequently it covers a broad range. Everyone who has read it has been impressed and it gave the students the chance to put their theory into practice and see the end product.î
Wei Yang wrote an article about the city of Guangzhou entitled ìExplore the most exciting city in the worldî for the Colors magazine.
He said: ìWe all wanted the chance to improve our English and of course the magazine allowed us to push the boundaries of our creativity using the journalistic skills we have been taught over the last year.î
The magazine goes on display along with other Colors notebooks from around the world in October until November and the project exists to ìcelebrate freedom of expression.î
Matt added: ìPeople from Europe and the rest of the world will be able to see the work of UCLan students and it is a credit to them that they have put something so impressive together in such a short space of time.î
