Graduate appointed assistant editor of three health magazines
A former MA Magazine student has been appointed assistant editor of three magazines only six months after joining the company.
Danusia Osiowy will work on Pharmacy Today, Over the Counter and Chemist and Druggist at CMP Information after starting as a graduate trainee in January.
She initially worked on the magazines as a reporter writing both news and features and it came as a complete shock to be promoted so quickly.
Surreal
Danusia said: ìI couldnít believe it and it was never something I thought I had in the bag. I went to meet the team the other day and being introduced as the assistant editor was so unbelievably surreal – no more being introduced as the student, the work experience girl or the graduate.î
Danusia, from Blackburn, has always had an interest in health journalism and has completed a placement at Pulse magazine which she describes as a ìsteep learning curve.î
She admits she had never considered a career in business magazines before the graduate training scheme came along.
ìBefore I knew it I was on the train with a suitcase in tow. So far itís been a rollercoaster experience and I want a couple of years experience under my belt in a subject that I enjoy.î
Although they focus on specialist subjects Danusia describes some of the titles she works on as having a ìconsumery feel.î
She said: ìThis makes a refreshing change. I have just started looking into freelancing for other health and lifestyle magazines as eventually that is what I would like to do.î
The editor of Pharmacy Today and Features Editor of Chemist and Druggist, Fiona Salvage, said Danusia had impressed her in the short time she has been at the company.
Engaging
ìDanusia demonstrates an engaging, lively feature writing style that appeals to me and will suit our readers who are pharmacy assistants or pharmacists of all ages.
ìHer experience of putting her own magazine together for her MA should stand her in good stead for what the job will entail.î
Danusia studied English and Drama at DeMontfort University in Leicester before transferring to Manchester Metropolitan and studying Creative Writing. After taking a year out she then applied to UCLanís MA Magazine course and says she has always wanted to work in the magazine industry.
She added: ìMy face is permanently buried in one. My ambition is to one day become the editor of Marie Claire and to launch my own magazine and publishing house. But for now, its time to put everything I learnt on the course and on my placements, into action.î
