Graduate gets dream job at Sky News
A UCLan journalism graduate has been offered a position at Sky News just months after finishing her course.
Kelly Sage, who chose the television route in the final year of her BA (Hons) Journalism degree, will start work as a junior VT Operator at Sky News and will be responsible for what pictures go out on the air for international stories.
Opportunity
She said: ìIíve always wanted to work for Sky and so I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve worked so hard to get in to the industry, I have over 25 rejection letters and now I’ve finally got my break.î
Kelly was offered the job after she was invited to go down to Sky for the day and met a team of VT operators. She was also shown around the studios where Five News is filmed and the other aspects of Sky such as Sky Interactive.
Kelly said: ìI was asked about university, about news production, my views on the industry and then about myself. It really helped that Rob Kirk, the Editorial Development Manager at Sky News, visited the university only a few months ago and I was part of the gallery team running a programme with my class so they could watch us in action.î
Kelly was offered the job over the phone a few days later and is now eager to get started. She expects the job to be challenging especially when dealing with footage involving violence that Kelly will have to edit out before it can be aired.
ìThis is probably the toughest part of the job. Even though it’s not nice to look at it brings a sense of reality to the job and makes you think how lucky you are.î
Her former tutor Deborah Robinson said: ìIt is pleasing that she will be working in a more technical area of the industry and this highlights the excellent technical skills training we offer our TV Journalism students. We have recently invested in both iNews and Avid news production systems, which are used throughout the TV industry, and this gives our students a great advantage when they apply for jobs after graduation.î
Kelly added: ìIt’s going to be a lot of hard work but I’m really excited. A junior VT Operator role is a great stepping stone for getting into the newsroom, which is where I would like to work eventually.î
