More success for UCLan journalism students on new sports website
A second journalism student from UCLan has had his work published on a new USA based online sports magazine.
Second year Sports Journalism student Phil OíNeill approached Atomic Sports Media with a story about the Italian football match fixing scandal and the editor was so impressed with it he asked him to ìkeep the excellent work coming.î
Phil got in touch with Atomic Sports Media after seeing an article written by his course mate Jon Bellwood on the site. He has since offered two more stories up for publication and has been asked to write for the site on a permanent basis.
Confidence
Phil said: ìThe confidence it has given me is unbelievable. To hear a lecturer, friend or colleague praise your work is one thing but when a professional currently working in the industry enjoys your work and wishes to publish it you get the biggest buzz.î
The website exists to give aspiring journalists a chance to kick start their career and attracts users who ìwant an unbiased fresh view on sport.î It covers a diverse range of sports, from Golf to American Football.
Though the work is unpaid, all writers receive full credit for their stories that potentially can be picked up by hundreds of other publications who then do pay them to publish.
ìAt this stage it is not about the money it is about experience and developing my writing skills and I donít think you can put a price on that sort of opportunityî Phil said.
Phil, 27, has also written for the Southport Visitor during a three week placement and is also planning on sending articles off to the Liverpool FC website. He has even managed to turn a summer holiday in Australia into a potential story opportunity.
ìI have emailed the news team at Liverpool FC and will be writing some stories for them about Liverpool fans in Australia, including pictures. Although this is by no means a certainty in getting my work published on the site, I am knocking on as many doors as possible to get my work noticed.î
Phil hopes to develop his portfolio further over the next two years and says his ideal job would be to write for the sports section on a national newspaper. He would recommend writing for Atomic Sports Media to anyone wanting to break into the highly competitive industry.
Phil added: ìHave confidence in your work, check out the site and email the editor with your story ideas. The people at the site are great and really friendly. If you want to make your writing available to the world and be published on a credible web-site, then just go and do it.î
