Student life blog

A student has set up a blog on her local newspaperís website that provides an insight into university life.

Julie Dudley posted her first blog on the Bolton News website asking if university campuses are safe for students and it has already prompted a few comments. The final year print journalism student came up with the idea of including a young personís perspective in the paperís website blog listings and approached the web editor Chris Sudlow.

She said: ìEven though I go to university in Preston I still live in Bolton and I want to address student issues and make them relevant to Bolton people. A lot of topical matters affect students all over and not just in one area.î

Both serious and light-hearted

Julia plans to post her blog on ìStudent life and a youthful take on topical issuesî weekly and will muse over serious and light-hearted topics with students and graduates in mind.

ìI want to look at vandalism from a younger personís perspective and try to find out why they do it. My aim is to create a talking point and maybe prompt a reaction from local people.î

Julia would eventually like her blog to be included as a column in the Bolton News newspaper and says she has enjoyed writing in a different style to general reporting.

ìI enjoy bring able to express my opinion in what I write instead of having to be impartial like Iím expected to do when reporting. Itís exciting to read other peopleís reactions to what I say.î

Chris Sudlow said: “Working on this blog will give Julia an ideal opportunity to test reaction to her work. Hopefully The Bolton Blog, which we have only just started ,will attract thousands of page impressions as I am trying to cultivate a varied age range of bloggers and their respective subjects.”

Julia added: ìIf my blogs are successful then people should be talking about what Iíve said across Bolton pubs!î
