Geoff Elliott becomes a CBE

Former Head of the Department Geoff Elliott has been made a CBE for services to journalism in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The 59-year-old former newspaper editor retired last year, after three years as Head of Journalism at Preston.

A distinguished 40-year journalism career, starting out on his home-town newspaper, the Coventry Evening Telegraph, has seen him edit three newspapers – The News, Portsmouth, the Coventry Evening Telegraph and the Kent Messenger.

Geoff has also served on the Press Council, the Press Complaints Commission, the Editors’ Code Committee, and the Broadcasting Standards Commission.

He is also a past chairman of the Guild of Editors’ parliamentary and legal committee and a past president of both the Guild and its successor, the Society of Editors.

Geoff now lives in Shute, near Axminster in Devon, with his wife Lyn.
