Radio 4 opportunity for students

The department is encouraging its budding radio journalists to enter a prestigious BBC competition. Journalism students who have studied radio as part of their course are being invited to enter the File on 4 competition, with a placement on the BBC Radio 4 show going to the winner. The award-winning programme is the network’s flagship documentary series and has been at the vanguard of investigative journalism for 25 years. Senior lecturer, Louise Randall, worked for the BBC as a reporter and producer on network radio and television before joining the department. She is hoping to encourage as many Uclan students to enter as possible.

BRILLIANT

“This is a brilliant competition,” said Louise. “File on 4 is the epitome of documentary news making. There is nothing better.” Entrants have to make an investigative current affairs documentary between 25 and 30 minutes long, which is lively, compelling and original. The judges are the controller of BBC Radio 4, the programme’s editor and daring undercover journalist Paul Kenyon from the television show Kenyon Confronts. The nationwide competition has already attracted interest in the department, with second year BA Journalism students keen to enter as well as third year and postgraduate radio students. File on 4 is offering a six week placement to whoever submits the most outstanding documentary and may air the winning entry. All finalists will have their work showcased and will be invited to an awards ceremony. The runners up receive £200.

BEST IN THE BUSINESS

Louise Randall said: “The prize is excellent. Students couldn’t get a better start. “It will help the winner make contacts and show how impressive they can be in a real work setting, as well as learning from the best in the business.” The competition closes on June 9 and is open nationwide to individuals, or pairs of students, on journalism courses.
