Rock FM News Editor pops in
Broadcast journalism students were given a helping hand this week when Michelle Ponting, News Editor at Prestonís Rock FM, visited the Department during their annual news week.
Michelle, who has worked at several radio stations in the North West before moving to Rock FM 15 months ago, was on hand to offer her expertise and advice to the post-graduate students.
Students regularly run news days. But the news week ,which takes place after Christmas, is designed to refresh the students and get them back to working to tight deadlines in a newroom environment, under the eye of visiting professional journalists.
Course leader Mike Green believes the news week and the news days are particularly useful for the students.
ìThe news week is very valuable because it gets students back into the swing of things. They get to put all the skills they have learned into practice and speak to people working in the industry.î
ìThey then have the two weekly news days where they continue build up their skills and get them used to working in a newsroom.î
Other guest visits to the department include Johnny Massey and Steve Blears, both reporters on Radio One Newsbeat.
Michelle Ponting stresses the importance of doing a work experience placement while studying to be a journalist.
ìItís essential that you do get placements because that is how you build up your contacts. You need to be prepared to be pushy and enthusiastic and to do anything for anyone ñ for free.î
