Magazine tips from Editorial Director of UK publishing house
The editorial director of a leading UK publishing house has given magazine students an insight into business magazines.
Lindsay Cook from CMPi media spoke to both postgraduate and undergraduate students about the company that produces 40 industry magazines in the UK ranging from construction to health.
She said: ìWe write for professionals and our readers tend to regard themselves as experts in their area.î
Well established publications are The Publican, Property Week, the Farmers Guardian and medical magazine Pulse and Lindsay talked about the differences between business to business and consumer magazines.
Loyalty
ìWe look at ways of bringing buyers and sellers together and we have a much closer relationship with our readers than consumer magazines. Our readers are more likely to be loyal because they need to know what is happening in their industry.î
Another fundamental issue is trust.
Lindsay said: ìThe reader puts their trust in us and we have to respect that. We serve communities and are at the heart of it.î
Graduate Training scheme
She also told the students about the CMPi graduate training scheme which recruits 10 journalists each year to work across several of its weekly titles including Pulse, Travel Trade Gazette, Music Weekly and the Farmers Guardian.
She said: ìWe do tend to throw people in at the deep-end but because you try out a variety of magazines it gives you more options at the end and helps to develop confidence.î
Graduates are assigned to a senior journalist at every magazine they work on who checks that they are ìfully engagedî.
ìOver the year you will touch on many different subjects, make useful contacts, write good stories and can end up being rated by news editors from a wide range of publications.î
The standard of entry is high with around 300 people competing for the 10 places available. Those who do make the grade can expect a £20,000 salary and a possible permanent job at the end of the year-long scheme.
Lindsay added: ìThe industry expects a lot from journalists these days and we want to show you that there is a career to be had.î
Two UCLan graduates have already had success with CMPi. Danusia Osiowy is the Assistant Editor of Pharmacy Today and Tom Levitt, a senior reporter for the Farmers Guardian, recently won the CMPi Newcomer of the Year award 2007.
