Over forty invited guests from the national, regional and local news media and academia turned out for the launch of ëThe Future of Journalism in the Advanced Democraciesí book.

The book has been written by a panel of distinguished UK and international journalists and academics with staff from UCLanís journalism department contributing a variety of specialist chapters.

Already well reviewed by internationally renowned academic Professor Bob Franklin and the Secretary of the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, Jim Latham, the book is selling well.

The event, held at Waterstonesí Manchester Deansgate branch, was designed to give those at the cutting edge of many of the issues that the book deals with a first hand chance to find out what it has to say from some of its key authors and to question them about their conclusions.

Provoke debates

Co-editor Peter Anderson said: ìThe launch was our first opportunity to present our views on the changing face of journalism to people who are key parts of that change and see what they think. We had a really useful discussion after the presentation and it is our hope that this is just the first of many debates that the book will provoke.î

The organisers of the evening have received a number of emails from both academics and media colleagues saying how much they enjoyed the event.

Peter added: ìIt was very rewarding to see so many people turn out on an evening that saw some of the worst weather of the year.î

The department will be continuing the debate started by the book in a number of follow-up articles during the next two years.
