Granadaís Head of News returns after BAFTA nomination
Head of Granada News and former postgraduate student Richard Frediani has returned to UCLan after the regional news programme was nominated for a BAFTA award.
Richard, who graduated from UCLan in 1990 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism, came to the department to talk to broadcast students about Granadaís local government election coverage in May and also spoke of his excitement of the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nomination.
Tribute
He said: ìTo be part of something as big as the BAFTAís is amazing and a great achievement that no one can take away from us. Itís a tribute to all of the team at Granada that we have done so well.î
The nomination is for a Granada news report on the Morecambe Bay tragedy that has already won a Royal Television Society and a Broadcast Award and is up against the BBC Ten Oíclock News, Channel Four News and ITV News in the ìNews Coverageî category of the BAFTAís.
It is the first time since the BAFTA Awards was established in 1953 that a regional news programme has been up for nomination.
Richard commented: ìThis nomination shows that regional news programmes can make just as important contributions as national programmes. It wasnít expected that we would produce something of such good quality and it just shows what can be achieved by making brave and bold decisions.î
He also arranged for students from the department to cover local government election counts all over the region for Granada with the chance to have their footage aired.
He advised students to focus on getting key images and shots and to also be aware of the national dimensions of local elections adding: ìIt will provide useful experience of working under pressure.î
Richard was also presented with a gift from the broadcast lecturers and students to congratulate him on the nomination success and for the help he has given to the course over the years.
He said: ìI enjoy coming back to UCLan as every year I see students with great potential who I may work with one day. It is one of the best courses in the country and provides an excellent calibre of students who are a credit to the broadcast course.î
