Former student is head of BAFTA winning news team
Granadaís Head of News and former postgraduate student Richard Frediani is celebrating a historic BAFTA win for the ITV regional news programme.
The Granada news team beat BBC’s Ten OíClock News, Channel Four News and ITV News in the ìNews Coverageî category of the BAFTAs, marking the first ever win for a regional news programme in the history of the awards.
Richard said: ìIt is unbelievable to win this award and totally unexpected. We were excited just to be nominated so to go on and win is amazing.î
Granada won with a report on the Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy that has already won a Royal Television Society and a Broadcast Award.
Important role
ìThe occasion was tinged with sadness because of the topic of the story. It shows however that regional news has an important role to play in situations like this and the excellent quality of what the whole team produced has been recognisedî said Richard.
12 people from the Granada News team went to the awards and Richard said it was great to be part of the whole BAFTA experience.
ìWe were surrounded by celebrities and after we won we had to speak to the press. I kept thinking you donít want to speak to me you want to speak to Victoria Wood!î
Richard recently visited the UCLan journalism department to talk to students about local elections. He left UCLan in 1990 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism and regularly visits the department.
He said: ìI enjoy coming back to UCLan as every year I see students with great potential who I may work with one day.î
In the aftermath of the BAFTA awards Richard said the whole office is proud of their achievement and he hopes the other regional news channels will consider putting themselves forward for future nominations.
ìIt is great for Granada to win this and shows that regional news programmes can produce good quality news. It is a tribute to all of our hard work and shows that sometimes dreams do come true.î
