Student celebrates clean sweep of Press Gazette Awards
Journalism student Mark Hughes has won a clean sweep of awards at this yearís Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards.
The awards, described by ITV News Presenter Chris Rogers as ìthe one award watched most carefully by talent spottersî saw Mark win the overall Student Journalism Award as well as Student News Writer of the Year and Student Scoop of the Year.
Rogers said Hughes had the ability to “deliver powerful, compelling and complete storiesî. One judge commented: “he could walk into any news room and do a great jobî.
Mark said it was a complete shock to win all three awards.

ìIt is excellent news. I had no idea I was going to win in three categories and to win the overall Student Journalist award is fantastic.î
Showtime! Magazine, which had been short listed for Student Team of the Year, were thrilled to have attended the awards, and witness a fellow UCLan journalist take the spotlight.
Masters in Magazine Journalism course leader Cathy Darby, said she was delighted with Mark Hughesí success. ìIt couldnít be better news. Itís fantastic for him and his parents.” She added, ìIím sure heís going to have a brilliant future.î
At his graduation ceremony four days later Mark was also awarded the Alan Burgess Prize. It is presented annually to a UCLan graduate in honour of the former LEP journalist who lost his battle with cancer when he was only 44-years-old.
Markís tutor Delwyn Swingewood said: ìMark’s an exceptionally talented young journalist. It’s been a pleasure to work with him.”
