Mixing with the stars
A UCLan BA Journalism graduate has been mixing with the stars on some of the country’s most popular reality TV shows.
Tim Wagg, 23, who graduated in 2007, is working for Birmingham-based production company Maverick TV on Channel 4’s ‘Embarrassing Bodies’. But he has also worked on The Apprentice, Gok Wan’s Beauty Show and Coleen’s Real Women.
After returning from a round the world trip in May, visiting South Africa, Australia and South America, Tim, who specialised in radio at university, wanted to get stuck in straight away.
“When I came back to the UK my head was buzzing and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” he said.
Thrown in at the deep end
“I decided to apply for some work experience in London and four days later I was down the capital thrown in at the deep end!”
It wasn’t always a walk in the park for Tim. After his first placement, he found that getting a job in TV wasn’t going to be easy.
Tim said: “I must have sent hundreds of emails and made loads of phone calls just to get work experience but no one wanted to know. I started to become despondent but then I was offered all these jobs and I had to start turning people away.
“The best advice I can give people looking for a job or thinking about starting out in TV is to be persistent and don’t be scared to ask for work. If they don’t want you now just keep trying until they will give you a chance.”
Tim now hopes to move up the ladder and one day achieve his ultimate goal directing undercover documentaries. “I’m absolutely delighted to get this job and really hope this is the first step in a successful career in television.
“My time at UCLan certainly gave me the grounding essential to start working in the media and I hope to come back one day and give future students the same opportunities I had.”
