Sports commentators talk the talk
Eddie Hemmings, Sky Sports’ Rugby League presenter and commentator, talked to students on the Sports Journalism course about the strains and stresses, and fun and enjoyment, of his job. He was accompanied by Sky’s RL executive producer and Outside Broadcast director Neville Smith who used a series of DVDs to demonstrate how an OB director uses multiple cameras to create a dynamic live sequence of sporting action.
Earlier in the week BBC Match of the Day commentator Alistair Mann talked to the students about his career and then led two workshops in which small groups of students tried their hand at commentating.
All three urged the students to show determination when looking for their first job in the media. Eddie said: “You have a great advantage in studying on this course. It has a very high reputation.”
At the end of their session Eddie and Neville invited students from the Sports Journalism final year broadcast group to visit one of Sky’s Rugby League OBs and see what goes on behind the scenes.
