Bauer Media take the plunge with a new men’s weekly.

There’s always been speculation within the magazine industry over whether a lifestyle men’s weekly magazine would work or not.

Although there have been forays into this market, e.g. Nuts and Zoo, the idea of a men’s magazine, which has a more substantial content has not really been explored…until now.

From October 26 Bauer Media will release more than 500,000 copies of their pilot men’s weekly, Project Rex. The news and style magazine will be targeting “upscale 30-something men” and be available through Bauer’s other titles, such as, Q, Mojo, Empire, Car, Golf World and Grazia.

“The pilot issue of Project Rex will provide successful men with a unique combination of the key news stories of the week with all the latest lifestyle trends and products,” Bauer said in a statement.

Andrew Pemberton, the former editor of Q magazine, will edit the magazine.

So, do we think it will work?

I am not sure about this idea from Bauer media. I think Project Rex is a good idea in theory but one that is unlikely to take off in reality. I think the target audience will be more likely to stick to reading newspapers and online news sites than a mens lifestyle magazine. I look forward to seeing it and taking a look at how they approach the editorial.

Glad to see someone taking the plunge, but really not sure about the name. Sounds like a dinosaur dig.
