Cover for first edition of Hunger magazine

British photographer Rankin is launching a new arts and fashion magazine this week called Hunger.  It is being published by Dazed Group, who also have Dazed and Confused, AnOther and AnOther Man magazines in there stable.  The first edition of the bi-annual magazine comes 20 years after the first edition of Dazed and Confused.

The magazine has a current print run of 47,000 and will cost £4 each.  Each magazine will feature a male and female cover version and will launch alongside Hunger.TV, an online site featuring fashion films, interviews and updates throughout the year.  Cheryl Cole and Sky Ferreira have been the first stars of Hunger.TV giving exposure to the start-up magazine through mediums such as YouTube.

Rankin says that Hunger will celebrate the “innate drive that we all possess and that, with a bit of creativity, can be used as an impetus for cultural change”, and provide  “creative beings with a new platform for uncompromised self-expression, innovation and discovery. The Hunger is an idea that was born from the realisation that, more than two decades into my career as a photographer, I am still inspired by what I do every day. I named my first retrospective exhibition Visually Hungry – that’s how I felt. In a lot of ways, it is how I think I’ll feel until I die.”

Who is Emma Rigby?

Visiting the Lakes in August 2011

A 20 year old aspiring journalist trying to get her foot in the door.

Despite studying in Preston, I remain firmly based in St Helens, Merseyside. I understand that not many people know where St Helens is unless they have a keen interest in Rugby League, glass or…I think that’s about all we’re famous for actually.

It may be a cliché but I really have wanted to be a journalist for as long as I can remember. Writing has always been a passion of mine and I especially love writing about Rugby League, entertainment and lifestyle.

I’ll soon be doing two weeks work placement at the St Helens Star followed by one week at Lancashire Publications (Wigan Evening Post and Wigan Observer) and then one week at Lancashire Life. Despite being extremely nervous, I’m also really excited to get out there into the world of journalism and make my mark on the industry.
